Plans for 2007-08 Academic Year to be Finalized Soon
The Café will be open for several special
programs (see
events for details).
There are also opportunities to book the
University Café for Holiday parties during the afternoons and on
some Monday and Tuesday evenings in December.
The University
Café will be available
for a variety of other programs, including the Sunday Acoustic
Series, late evening entertainment programs, and campus department
gatherings. Schedules for these events will be announced on the
website.
As of December 1st, 2006 the University
Café is no longer financially supported or operated by the Graduate
Student Organization. However, its current location was developed,
funded, and supported by a number of University departments and
groups including the Faculty Student Association, the Dean of the
Graduate School, the University Senate Committee on Student Life,
the Office of the President, the Vice President for Student Affairs,
the Vice President for Administration, the Office of the Dean of
Medicine, the Graduate Student Organization, Campus Dining Services,
and individual faculty members. A responsibly managed venue serving
a large percentage of the campus population aged 21 and over,
including all graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty,
staff, and alumni continues to be a desirable asset to the
University community. Unlike off-campus pubs that operate based on
profitability from the sale of alcohol, the continuing support for
University Cafe is based on its ability to provide a comfortable
venue that promotes social interactions among our diverse campus
constituencies. It is, however, expected that the University Cafe
will not incur significant financial losses that would drain
important resources from campus programs and activities central to
the University’s educational mission.
The renovation of the Bleacher Club
and Ballroom in the Stony Brook Union is the new “Union
Commons.” The Union Commons will help support the food service needs
of an expanding Stony Brook student population. The current location
of University Café is uniquely suited to operate as part of a Union
Commons area, via its internal entrance, as well as be accessible
through its external patio entrance during hours that the Union
Building is closed.
